Chitosan and Its Derivatives in Biological Pesticides

Chitosan, soluble chitosan, and Chitosan oligosaccharides (COS) are natural compounds derived from chitin, commonly used in biological pesticides. They provide a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides, helping protect plants while minimizing environmental impact.

Chitosan is a high molecular weight biopolymer, often used in powders or film-forming products. It creates a protective barrier on plant surfaces, suppresses pathogens, and retains moisture and nutrients, improving overall plant health. Soluble chitosan, modified for water solubility, is ideal for liquid sprays or irrigation, allowing better absorption and faster activation of plant defenses. Chitosan oligosaccharides, with their low molecular weight, are rapidly taken up by plants, triggering systemic resistance and promoting growth while enhancing nutrient uptake.

All three forms work by inhibiting microbial and fungal growth, stimulating the plant’s immune system, and forming a protective film that reduces stress from environmental factors. They are used at low concentrations—typically 0.1–2%—and can be applied via sprays, soil treatments, or seed coatings.

By incorporating chitosan, soluble chitosan, or COS, farmers can boost plant defenses, improve crop growth, and reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, making them a key tool in sustainable and integrated pest management.
