Synonym(s): Deacetylated Chitin, Poly(D-glucosamine)
Molecular Formula: (C6H11NO4)n
Forms: Flakes or Powder

High Molecular Weight Chitosan (HMWC) generally refers to chitosan with a molecular weight above 700 kDa. Its key feature lies in the strong intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonding within the polymer chain, resulting in more entangled molecular structures and reduced solubility in neutral aqueous solutions. This property makes HMWC less permeable through cell membranes but gives it strong adsorption to cell walls, leading to membrane weakening, rupture, and leakage — which is believed to be the main antimicrobial mechanism of HMWC.

Applications

  • Used to produce high-molecular natural polymers such as electrospinning fibers, hydrogels, and membrane base materials.
  • Applied as agricultural seed coating for antibacterial and antiviral purposes.
  • Utilized in biomedical materials, water purification, and food preservation applications.
